Join us on Tuesday, September 7th for a screening of "Abraham's Children," a feature documentary on Muslim-American children from the New York Tri-State area. Doors will open for this event at 6 PM. The screening will begin promptly at 6:30 PM.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion, co-hosted by Intersections and Clock Wise Productions, to further explore the issues raised in the film.
Panelists include:
Louis Cristillo
Cristillo earned his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 2004 and is presently a lecturer in International and Comparative Education in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies, Teachers College. From 1978 to 1996, Dr. Cristillo lived and worked as an educator and curriculum consultant in the Kingdom of Morocco. Dr. Cristillo teaches courses on education and development in the Middle East; education and social theory; and methods in educational research. Dr. Cristillo was the lead investigator of a three-year study on Muslim youth in New York City Public schools, and recently directed a study on undergraduate teaching practices in the West Bank and Gaza. Dr. Cristillo is currently working on a book manuscript on Muslim-American youth in public and private schools.
Nina Froriep
Swiss-born Director and Producer of the feature documentary Abraham’s Children, Froriep has worked in documentary production for over a decade. She has worked on several award winning documentaries, two of which were about children: The Dignity of Children, an Emmy-nominated two-hour ABC primetime special; as well as the Emmy Award winner, Voices of Children, about the Terezin Camp in World War II in the Czech Republic. In addition, Froriep has worked as Producer in the film and event-production circuit for over twenty years, the past 12 years of which with her company, Clock Wise Productions, Inc.; a boutique corporate video and multi-media production company.
Susan Smith
A revert to Islam since 1986, Smith works for Islamic Relief USA's Northeast Office as Public Affairs and Media Relations Representative. She is the former principal of Andalusia School in Yonkers, NY; senior manager with Volunteers of America, Greater-New-York at the largest homeless shelter in the United States; and director of divorce mediation services at the Dispute Resolution Center of Orange and Putnam Counties, NY. Smith worked with the United Nations as media analyst with the Department of Public Information at its New York headquarters, voter registration officer with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in the Western Sahara, and special assistant and speechwriter to the Ambassador of Lebanon to the UN. Smith is a free-lance journalist, and a proponent of interfaith dialogue, education and civic involvement.
