The 9/11 Ribbons of Hope
To honor the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, families, friends, and individuals from all parts of New York City will be invited to create a ribbon that would include their personal short message/prayer/wish, and attach that ribbon on a tapestry located at Battery Park from September 9th to September 12th.
Known as the “9/11 Ribbons of Hope,” this activity is being organized by the Prepare New York coalition. Participants will be asked to participate in coordination with other members of their local church, synagogue, mosque, temple, neighborhood, or civic organization. Individuals and groups will be encouraged to create ribbons and send them to be added to the tapestry in the weeks leading up to 9/11.
On the day of September 11th, Prepare New York’s action and congregation partners will be organizing events that will all be linked and coordinated. Participants of all events will be invited to express their wishes and prayers on ribbons that will be provided to them, and a representative will eventually bring them to the tapestry that will unify them all.
On the day of September 12th, New York religious leaders and other appropriate guests will be invited to officially dedicate the tapestry of “9/11 Ribbons of Hope” and conclude this year’s anniversary activities.
In the weeks and months after September 12th, we hope to bring the tapestry, in part or in whole, to preeminent locations around the city for display, in an effort to continue the dialogue of inclusion, compassion, and celebration of religious diversity.
Prepare New York is committed to a “9/11 Ribbons of Hope” event which promotes compassion over anger, kindness over hatred, understanding over bigotry and courage over fear. These events will resonate in the hearts and minds of New Yorkers long after the day.
